"Enchanted" behind-the-scenes drama over the years: a timeline
The power of three will free us ... from everything but drama.
Charmed, which premiered on The WB in 1998, made headlines right from the start as Aaron Spelling hired Shannen Doherty to play one of the three Halliwell sisters four years after she was infamously fired from Spelling Television in Beverly Hills, 90210.
“[Aaron] was extremely supportive of the idea of casting Shannen Doherty for the role of Prue,” recalled creator Constance M. Burge for InTouch in 2018, noting that the actress's chemistry with Holly Marie Combs was one of the reasons the producers wanted her to be role. "Holly was at Picket Fences at the time and she was also good friends with Shannen so they had amazing chemistry with each other."
When Doherty and Combs take on the roles of Prue and Piper, respectively, Laurie Rom was to complete the trio as Phoebe's younger sister. After they took down the pilot, Rom was redone with Alyssa Milano.
“As far as I understand, [Laurie's] desire to leave was for personal reasons. It was posted, and after that Alyssa and I were just lucky, ”Burge explained. “She was horrible and sad to leave, but we were lucky that everything worked out with Alissa. I think Alissa definitely brought ... sexuality to this role. They both did a good job, and thank God Alissa decided to stay. It would be terrible to lose her too. At that time, the show was about two sisters. "
While the chemistry between the Halliwell sisters worked on screen, the behind-the-scenes tension was high and history repeated itself when Doherty left after three seasons.
